Though visitors often find it difficult to see, it is a must-see site as a way of remembrance and contextualization of the atrocity of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Benin has been a major platform in slavery and visiting the site today will take you through every step taken back then by slaves until the shores where they embarked on slave ships. From slaves’ prisons to bargaining markets, or from ritual sites intended to make the slaves forget their origins and past, to the Shore of No Return.
